40th Anniversary

In 2011, UNSW Law commemorated its 40th Anniversary with a full calendar of celebrations including public lectures, conferences, book and journal launches, a film festival, gala dinner and more. Adding to this sense of occasion was the graduation of our 10,000th law student and the announcement of three new scholarships for 2012.

Take a look back on the highlights of our 40th Anniversary year.

40th Anniversary

The 40th Anniversary Dinner

Chief Justice of the High Court, the Hon. Robert French, and Attorney-General, the Hon Robert McClelland, were among the 350 guests who gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of UNSW Law School on 17 September 2011.

Justice Robert French delivered the keynote address, tracing the history of the Law School over 40 years and its role as a leader.UNSW Chancellor, David Gonski, an early graduate of the Law School, reminisced about his days as law student and the spirit of the place and current Dean, David Dixon, launched the Ngoc Tram Nguyen Scholarship, which will be offered to a student with a background of social and economic disadvantage in South West Sydney to study law.

The evening also celebrated the launch of the most generous scholarships in the Law School’s history, the John M Green Scholarship program for disadvantaged students enabling a total of six $100,000 scholarships to be provided.

Films for Thought Series

This film festival showcased movies that dealt with some of the key issues concerning the Law School -- including Indigenous rights, refugees, climate change and treatment of marginalized groups.
