Michelle completed a Social Work Degree at Sydney University in 1984. Upon graduation she was employed as a Policy Worker at the Housing Information and Referral Service, Sydney. In 1989 Michelle moved to Britain where she resided for ten years. Whilst in Britain she worked for a number of community organizations including the Camden Federation of Private Tenants and the Kings Cross Homelessness Project. She also undertook her Law Degree (Hons) at the University of North London. After graduating Michelle became the inaugural Director of the Tottenham Legal Advice Centre.
Michelle returned to Australia in 1998 and took up the appointment of Co-ordinator at Kingsford Legal Centre, UNSW. She is responsible for the co-ordination and planning of the Centres services to the community. She also supervises social work/law students at the centre and participates in the teaching programme at the centre.
Throughout Michelles career she has been active in the field of social justice and community welfare. This has been recognised through various ministerial appointments including as a community representative on the Association of London Government Homelessness Working Party and the NSW Rental Bond Board. Michelle is currently a Director on the Board of the New South Wales Council of Social Service (NCOSS). Michelle is an Australian Regional Representative on the Steering Committee of the Global Alliance for Justice Education and the Secretary of the Tenants Union of New South Wales.
