Vedna Jivan completed her Arts degree at the University of NSW and graduated from law in 1994. In addition to being a practising solicitor she is a registered Migration Agent. After being admitted in 1995, Vedna worked at the Refugee Advice and Casework Service, Redfern Legal Centre as well as various regional legal centres.
Vedna came to Kingsford Legal Centre in 1996 as a locum solicitor and was then appointed to run a consumer credit test case which settled successfully in 1998 ending 10 years of litigation. She was appointed to the Editorial Committee of the NSW Lawyers Practice Manual in 1998. In 1999 she represented the Kingsford Legal Centre and the University of NSW at the Commonwealth Legal Education Association Conference and presented a paper on developments in Clinical Legal Education which she co-authored with Jeff Giddings, Director of Clinical Legal Education, Griffith University, QLD. In 2000 she was appointed co-ordinator of the Centre’s community legal education program and under her supervision the Centre’s program has expanded significantly.
Vedna is an active provider of community legal education and has conducted sessions on a variety of legal issues to women’s groups, schools, pensioners, migration agents and disability groups. In 2001, she coordinated an application to gain consultative status with ECOSOC on behalf of 160 community legal centres in Australia. Most recently she has been invited by the Women’s Rights Action Network Australia (WRANA) to represent the interests of migrant women at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. Ms Jivan is a member of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights and the Global Alliance for Justice Education.
