Risk Management & Insurance Information for Law Students

Information provided on this website outlines UNSW’s level of support in terms of insurance cover.

This is information put together for student’s information only and it is NOT an insurance policy or insurance advice. UNSW Insurance Policy can be found on the UNSW Risk Advisory and Internal Audit Website. Students who seek advice on travel insurance should always consult a licensed insurance professional.

Overview

UNSW provides accidental injury insurance for all Full Time and Part Time Students enrolled in UNSW (undergraduate and postgraduate degrees), who are injured while participating in an approved ‘UNSW activity’ such as attending an internship, conference, short-term overseas course, Exchange program, Mooting competition, or participate in any business that is in the interests of UNSW.

Below are 4 main categories/situations on whether or not a student is covered by UNSW Insurance:

  1. UNSW approved, enrolled overseas/local placement (enrolled Exchange semester, overseas elective course, internship, clinics, moot competition courses) that is part of a student’s degree requirement.

YES – this is covered by UNSW Insurance during the whole duration of placement.

  2. UNSW approved, non-paid work experience/internship/mooting competition/conferences that is not part of a student’s degree requirement.

YES - this is covered by UNSW Insurance during the whole duration of placement, as long as the student does not complete all courses in their degree program before or during the placement (i.e. they have not completed the last exam/assessment for their final course.)

  3. UNSW approved, paid work experience/internship that is not part of student’s degree requirement.

NO – this is NOT covered by UNSW Insurance. All paid placements should be insured by the employer or organisation.

  4. UNSW non-approved, non-paid and paid work experience/internship/mooting competition/conferences that is not part of a student’s degree requirement.

NO – this is NOT covered by UNSW Insurance. You will need to arrange your own insurance cover.
