LAW UNSW : University of New South Wales, Faculty of Law - Sydney Australia

Coordinated by student volunteers, the Law Mentoring Support Network (LawMSN) functions through 60 volunteer student mentors. It is a joint initiative by the Law Faculty and UNSW Law Society, supported by the UNSW Counselling Unit. The program is dedicated to facilitating adjustment to university life and more specifically, to prepare first year entrants to the Law School via mentoring.

This program has been established to reinforce the unique student culture of the law school that underpins our teaching model based on discussion and the numerous additional programs and activities within the law school. The mentoring program aims to encourage inter-year student involvement to establish an inclusive and welcoming school environment.

The Law School experience is distinctive and contrasts greatly with other degree programs, thereby delivering its own brand of stresses and opportunities, not to mention still enjoyable. LawMSN aims to prepare first year students so as to ensure that new students enrich and maximise their first year of university. The program runs through Session One, involving weekly meetings within small groups of students. Mentors within each group act as facilitators for discussion. The purpose of the program is to ease new students through the transition from high school, workplace or another field of study into Law School. It also allows the opportunity for first year law students to meet other first year students outside of class hours during those first few weeks of University and Law School. The aim of the program to encourage the development of interpersonal relationships and establish a mentality inclusive of both the social and academic spheres of university life.

All first year law students in 2010 (undergraduate, transfer and graduate law) are strongly encouraged to sign up for the LawMSN Program. Registration opens on late February at the Law Faculty welcome. Throughout Week 1, registration will also be available during first year law classes and online registration.

If you have any questions or concerns, or would simply like to find out more about the LawMSN Program, do not hesitate to email the coordinators at lawmsn@unswlawsoc.org.
