Each Semester is divided into three teaching periods. Courses will also no longer be offered in the winter recess between Semester 1 and Semester 2.
You can view the new Academic Calendar at https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/resources/AcademicCalendar.html
Courses will have specific add and withdraw without penalty dates depending on the teaching period in which they fall. You can view the add/drop/withdraw without penalty dates applicable for different teaching periods on: https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/enrolment/EnrolmentDates.html
It is your responsibility to ensure that you enrol in/drop out of courses by the appropriate date.
Enrolment Appointments apply for continuing graduate law students An Enrolment Appointment is simply the day and time from which you can begin enrolling. It is not an appointment for a face-to face interview.
To see your enrolment appointment log in to myUNSW, Go to the My Student Profile tab. From the 'My Student Services' menu on the left, select the Enrolment>Enrolment Appointments option.
Enrolment Appointments are allocated centrally using a new matrix system. Staff in the Faculty of Law Student Services Office cannot view the matrix system used to determine appointment times. In addition to this, Student Services Staff do not have access to vary your enrolment appointment or process your enrolment into courses prior to your appointment time.
Students are expected to study courses in the sequence set out in the online Handbook.
Students must have completed all or most of the core courses before enrolling in electives.
Students who study out of sequence cannot subsequently request special concessions during the enrolment process.
Notes Regarding Pre-requisites
- If you attempt to enrol in an elective and receive the error message “Prerequisites not met” it could be because you have not completed sufficient core courses
- Property & Equity 1 is a pre-requisite for BA1. It is not permissible to complete these two courses concurrently. Students should make sure that they enrol in Property & Equity 1 in S1 and BA1 in S2 or S1 the following year.
From the second year onwards, Graduate Law students are free to choose from any of the available class times for appropriate courses. Enrolment is subject to availability of places and enrolment requisites if any.

Please refer to the appropriate program information below for advice on the courses you need to enrol in for your first semester. Enrolments for Semester 2 are expected to open in April/May. You can also view the complete program structure on the Online Handbook at www.handbook.unsw.edu.au.

New students enrolling in the Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Law) programs have a set timetable for their first year. Combined law students are able to access all classes except those marked 4790 and 4791 which are reserved for students enrolling in the single Bachelor of Laws.
There is also couple of places reserved for non-first year Graduate Law (Part-time) 4791 students.
Please note: All these reserved places will be opened for combined law students to enroll on 10am Friday 5 June 2009. Therefore, we strongly encourage graduate law students to enroll before this date.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are correctly enrolled and that the course(s) will count towards your program/specialisation. Add/drop deadlines apply for courses depending on the teaching period in which they fall. You must ensure that you enrol in or drop out of courses (as applicable), by the appropriate date.
LAWS2213 Foundations Enrichment 1 and LAWS2214 Foundations Enrichment 2
These courses are a support program for students admitted through the Indigenous Pre-Law Program, therefore they are not available to other students.
Sport, Law & Society in Australia – LAWS0250 and Sport & the Law in the Western World –LAWS 0251
These courses are available only to incoming Study Abroad students.
Students who enrolled in Foundations of Law in 2008 and failed to complete the research component should contact the Faculty of Law Student Services Office for assistance with their enrolment. Students should not enrol themselves on-line into LAWS1052 for 2009 as they will be billed for the incorrect amount of fees.
Students enrolled in the Graduate Law Full Time program will be able to enrol in a maximum of 27 UOC online via myUNSW.
Full Time Graduate Law students may wish to enrol in 28 UOC in Semester 1 (e.g. mix of 2 core courses and two elective courses). You must enrol in as many core courses as possible online via myUNSW and then email law@unswunsw.edu.au requesting assistance with enrolling in the final elective. Please quote your Student ID and details of the course you wish to be enrolled into (course code, course name, class number etc.). Enrolment is subject to availability of places and enrolment requisites if any.
Requests from Full Time Graduate Law students to enrol in excess of 28 UOC will constitute an overload and will need to be done via the Overload Request Form in February.
Part time graduate Law students are not permitted to exceed a part-time load. Part time graduate law students wishing to enrol in excess of a part time load must apply to transfer into the Full time program.
All requests to enrol in excess of 28 UOC must be submitted via the Overload Application Form. Overload requests can be lodged ONLY by students enrolled in the Full Time Graduate Law program.
The Overload Application Form will be available in February for Semester 1 and July for Semester 2.Overload requests for S1 2009 law courses will be processed ONLY at the end of February, after all the re-enrolling and new enrolments have been finalised. As for S2 2009, it will be processed ONLY in mid July.
Core Course Overloads
Students are generally permitted to overload ONLY with a Law elective (if eligible to do electives).
Students who are in the elective stage(s) of their degree program CANNOT request an overload in a core course. For e.g. if you have studied out of sequence and have a core course remaining in your final year of study, you must enrol online into that core course, and then request an overload into an additional elective.
Students who are in the earlier stages of their program can request to overload a core course, if they have completed at least 48 uoc of Law courses. Such requests will be approved ONLY in the first week of Semester 1 and if there are places available after accommodating standard re-enrolments.
Students admitted to 4791 Graduate Law PT may apply to transfer to 4790 Graduate Law FT, after completing 48 uoc in Law courses at UNSW.
The closing date for on-time transfer applications is Friday 30 January 2009. Applications received after this date can be processed only up until 27 February 2009. Applications received after 27 February 2009 will not be processed under any circumstance.
Part time Graduate Law students who lodge a request to transfer to the Full Time program after 27 February 2009 will need to enrol in a part time load until their request to transfer to the Full Time program is processed.
Some students in their final year request enrolment in an extra elective. For example some students wish to participate in a Moot competition, or wish to complete a research project or enrol in an elective that will be of benefit to their future career. Students should be aware that any additional enrolment “above degree requirements” will be charged at the non-award rate, not the HECS/Commonwealth Supported rate of fees.
**Note
This rule does not apply to students who are required to complete a 4 uoc elective as part of their degree requirements, but who chose to enrol in an 8 uoc elective instead. The additional 4 uoc will be charged at the standard HECS/Commonwealth Supported rate of fees.
This rule also does not apply to students who undertake the extra elective (s) to fulfil any additional elective requirements allocated due to advanced standing.
Please check room allocations on the timetable (Law Website) prior to attending your first class in case there have been last minute changes.
The allocation of teachers to core course classes is still being finalised. Details will be confirmed in Week 0.
Please note the Student Services Office will NOT be keeping waiting lists. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place in your chosen course or time-slot you must keep checking for vacancies through myUNSW.
