    Internet and zMail

The University expects all students to have off-campus access to a standard modern computer with CD drive and Internet connectivity. The ‘IT Requirements for UNSW Students’ policy is available form the UNSW IT Services website.

    zMail service

The University is replacing the current UniMail email service for all undergraduate students, postgraduate coursework students and alumni with a new email service called zMail. zMail provides a significant improvement over the current UniMail service which is limited to only 20Mb of storage.

Your zMail account will exist for life, as long as you maintain an association with the University either as a student or as a UNSW alumnus.

The zMail service is a web-based email service that is managed and provisioned by UNSW and hosted by Microsoft at the 'Outlook live' site in the USA.

Please note: students and alumni who currently redirect their incoming UNSW email to some other mail service such as Gmail or Hotmail will not be impacted by the introduction of zMail. However, a zMail email account will be created for these users to give them the opportunity to evaluate zMail as a preferred email environment.

    Getting started with zMail

Before you can access the zMail email service, you need to activate your zMail account and then redirect the mail that is currently going to your UniMail to your new zMail account. As the zMail service is hosted by Microsoft, some steps involve Microsoft resources.

zMail setup involves the following steps:

    1. Get a Windows Live ID password
    2. Set up your zMail account
    3. Redirect your UniMail emails to zMail

Step 1 » Setup your zMail Account (link to http://www.it.unsw.edu.au/students/zmail/setup.html)

    zMail email address formats

Email addresses will be the same format as currently used with UniMail, that is:
    Students – z1234567@student.unsw.edu.au
    Alumni – z1234567@unswalumni.com
Where z1234567 is your student number. Emails in this address format are sent or received via the UNSW Email Gateway.

Note: as zMail is hosted via Microsoft's Outlook Live site, you may see your login ID in the following form when displayed on Outlook Live interfaces:
    z1234567@zmail.unsw.edu.au
This is your Windows Live ID.

    UniMail

A UNSW email account (UniMail) is created for you automatically on enrolment.

Logging in to UniMail:  You can log into your UniMail account at: https://UniMail.unsw.edu.au/. You will need your Student ID & Unipass to log into your UniMail. Your Unipass is the password you use to log into myUNSW.
Before using the electronic services of UNSW like UniMail , you will need to activate your student account by agreeing to the rules and the conditions of use of UNSW's electronic services.

The default UniMail email address is based on your UNSW Student ID e.g. z1234567@student.unsw.edu.au. Instructions to change your UniMail address from the default address are available from the UNSW IT Services website.

You are required to check your UniMail account regularly. The University will convey important information to you, via your UniMail account e.g. results notification, enrolment and timetable changes, vital administrative or teaching material not provided any other way.

Forwarding UniMail account: You can elect to forward your UniMail to another preferred email account (work/personal email account). If you opt to forward your UniMail, it your responsibility to ensure that the nominated email address is current and valid. Instructions for forwarding your UniMail account are available from the UNSW IT Services website.

Where to get help: The IT Service Desk provides support for students and staff experiencing problems with UniMail. UniMail support is available by visiting the Service Desk, phoning 9385 1333 or emailing at ( servicedesk@unsw.edu.au ) during opening hours.
