You must submit certified copies of your transcripts along with the application for credit transfer. Students who transfer into the Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Law) from a Combined Law degree at another University must also include a statement from their previous institution detailing the law courses (if any) which have been credited towards the completed non-law degree.
The deadline for submission of credit transfer applications is Friday 30 January 2009 (Main round offers) and 13 February 2009 (Late and Final Round offers). We strongly recommend that you submit your documentation to the UNSW UAC Admissions Office as soon as you receive an offer. Please note that it will take at least two weeks for your application for credit transfer to be assessed.
If you are transferring from a DFEE place to a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) (previously known as HECS), in the same program, and have already selected your courses for 2009, no further action should be necessary. The approved courses you completed previously will automatically be credited towards your study program. You should however check MyUNSW to make sure that your fee status has been changed.
A summary of the credit you can expect to receive if you have studied law at a NSW university can be found at ADVANCED_STANDING_FOR_COURSES_AT_OTHER_NSW_UNIS.pdf
Students transferring from a non-law degree to the Combined Law program must enrol in the following Law courses in their first semester of study: LAWS 1052 Foundations of Law, LAWS 1071 Contracts 1 and LAWS 2140 Public Law. In all other instances, your enrolment will depend on your program structure, the advanced standing you receive, any knowledge pre-requisites and availability of places in the class of your choice. Enrolment Appointments apply for continuing undergraduate students An Enrolment Appointment is simply the day and time from which you can begin enrolling. It is not an appointment for a face-to face interview.
To see your enrolment appointment log in to myUNSW, Go to the My Student Profile tab. From the 'My Student Services' menu on the left, select the Enrolment>Enrolment Appointments option.
Enrolment Appointments are allocated centrally using a new matrix system. Staff in the Faculty of Law Student Services Office cannot view the matrix system used to determine appointment times. In addition to this, Student Services Staff do not have access to vary your enrolment appointment or process your enrolment into courses prior to your appointment time.
Students are expected to study courses in the sequence set out in the online Handbook.
Students must have completed all or most of the core courses before enrolling in electives.
Students who study out of sequence cannot subsequently request special concessions during the enrolment process.
Notes Regarding Pre-requisites
- If you attempt to enrol in an elective and receive the error message “Prerequisites not met” it could be because you have not completed sufficient core courses
- Property & Equity 1 is a pre-requisite for BA1. It is not permissible to complete these two courses concurrently. Students should make sure that they enrol in Property & Equity 1 in S1 and BA1 in S2 or S1 the following year.
Since places in electives are limited, classes for elective courses will be open for online enrolments ONLY at 10am Friday 22 May 2009. This is to ensure that all final year students have an equal chance to enrol electives. Requests to enrol in electives prior to this day will not be processed.
Also, approximately 2-3 places are reserved in each elective for incoming exchange students until Monday of the week before Week 1 of the semester i.e. 10am Monday 13 July 2009.
Enrolment in the following electives courses is by application ONLY:

LAWS2213 Foundations Enrichment 1 and LAWS2214 Foundations Enrichment 2
These courses are a support program for students admitted through the Indigenous Pre-Law Program, therefore they are not available to other students.
Sport, Law & Society in Australia – LAWS0250 and Sport & the Law in the Western World –LAWS 0251
These courses are available only to incoming Study Abroad students.
Students who enrolled in Foundations of Law in 2008 and failed to complete the research component should contact the Faculty of Law Student Services Office for assistance with their enrolment. Students should not enrol themselves on-line into LAWS1052 for 2009 as they will be billed for the incorrect amount of fees.
Combined Law students will be able to enrol in a maximum of 27 UOC online via myUNSW.
In some instances, you may wish to enrol in 28 UOC in Semester 1 (e.g. mix of 2 core courses and two elective courses). You must enrol in as many core courses as possible online via myUNSW and then email law@unswunsw.edu.au requesting assistance with enrolling in the final elective. Please quote your Student ID and details of the course you wish to be enrolled into (course code, course name, class number etc.). Enrolment is subject to availability of places and enrolment requisites if any.
Requests to enrol in excess of 28 UOC will constitute an overload and will need to be done via the Overload Request Form in February.
All requests to enrol in excess of 28 UOC must be submitted via the Overload Application Form.
The Overload Application Form will be available in February for Semester 1 and July for Semester 2.Overload requests for S1 2009 law courses will be processed ONLY at the end of February, after all the re-enrolling and new enrolments have been finalised. As for S2 2009, it will be processed ONLY in mid July.
Core Course Overloads
Students are generally permitted to overload ONLY with a Law elective (if eligible to do electives).
Students who are in the elective stage(s) of their degree program CANNOT request an overload in a core course. For e.g. if you have studied out of sequence and have a core course remaining in your final year of study, you must enrol online into that core course, and then request an overload into an additional elective.
Students who are in the earlier stages of their program can request to overload a non-law course if they have completed at least 48 uoc of study at UNSW.
Some students in their final year request enrolment in an extra elective. For example some students wish to participate in a Moot competition, or wish to complete a research project or enrol in an elective that will be of benefit to their future career. Students should be aware that any additional enrolment “above degree requirements” will be charged at the non-award rate, not the HECS/Commonwealth Supported rate of fees.
**Note
This rule does not apply to students who undertake the extra elective (s) to fulfil any additional elective requirements allocated due to advanced standing.
Please check room allocations on the timetable (Law Website) prior to attending your first class in case there have been last minute changes.
The allocation of teachers to core course classes is still being finalised. Details will be confirmed in Week 0.
Please note the Student Services Office will NOT be keeping waiting lists. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place in your chosen course or time-slot you must keep checking for vacancies through myUNSW.
