LAW UNSW : University of New South Wales, Faculty of Law - Sydney Australia

Program Overview

This program is designed primarily as a training course in advanced work. The candidate learns the fundamentals of research and acquires certain new techniques. The candidate must undertake an original investigation but this would normally be more limited in scope and degree of originality than for a doctorate.

Although originality is to be encouraged as much as possible, careful supervision is necessary at all times: the work should be closely supervised in the early stages and whenever a new techniques is being used.

Program Structure

The LLM by research program requires a minimum of three semesters of full-time study and preparation of a thesis. The length of an LLM research thesis normally should not exceed 70,000 words of text.

Student Evaluation

The Review Process

Three months after enrolment, and annually thereafter, candidates will meet a progress review panel whose role is to ensure that the thesis is progressing well and that supervision and other Faculty support is satisfactory.

Thesis Assessment

At least three examiners of the thesis will be appointed by the Faculty Research Committee, two of whom must be external unless the Committee is satisfied that it is not practicable. Please consult the University Postgraduate Handbook for conditions for the Award of Degrees.
