International Reputation

UNSW Law School graduates are held in the highest regard in Australia and overseas. The international recognition of the UNSW law degree is reflected in the exceptional number of Rhodes, Fulbright and other prestigious scholarships awarded to our students for postgraduate study overseas. The Law School has had 5 Rhodes Scholars in the last 7 years.

Continued High Level of Student Satisfaction

UNSW law students enjoy their law studies much more than most other law students from other Australian universities. This is evidenced by graduate overall satisfaction ratings as measured by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia's national survey.

Undergraduate courses in the Law Faculty at UNSW have consistently received overall satisfaction ratings way above the national average for law graduates at all universities in Australia.

National Professional Recognition

The UNSW Law School gives you a legal education which will equip you for national professional accreditation. The Bachelor of Laws satisfies the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner in New South Wales. All Law School undergraduate programs lead to the award of the degree Bachelor of Laws. The exception is the single degree, Bachelor of Jurisprudence. There are additional requirements for joining the legal profession in New South Wales. International students are advised to consult the appropriate professional body in their home country for details on professional recognition.

Learn More with Our Small Group Interactive Teaching

The UNSW Law School pioneered small group interactive teaching methods for law in the early 1970s. Such was the tremendous impact of this innovative teaching method that it set the standard for future Australian legal education. Even now, over 30 years later, this method of teaching is still the best educational approach for you as an intending lawyer. Your future career will regularly make demands on your capacity to explain and argue about the law. Our method of teaching helps you to develop superior skills of analysis, understanding and facility with legal materials.

With our insistence on active learning, the bulk of our teaching is done in groups no larger than 40, and sometimes as small as 20. Classes usually run for two hours and students prepare beforehand in order to participate actively during class.

Learn from Some of the Best Legal Minds

From the first day of studying at the Law School you will be taught by academics who, in addition to bringing excellent teaching skills to the classroom, are also at the forefront of current legal research. Through our interactive style of teaching you will be able to debate topical issues with lecturers who are genuinely interested in their subject and who will incorporate aspects of their latest research into your classes. This could be through lively class discussion of their latest findings, provision of specially compiled study materials to supplement the published texts or through supervision of student research projects.

Visits from international and well-known Australian legal figures who spend time with us pursuing research, giving seminars and teaching our students also form an important part of the rich intellectual life of the Law School.

Unique Clinical Education

UNSW Law School is the only metropolitan law school in Sydney with a community legal centre where practical experience counts towards your degree.

Through Kingsford Legal Centre the Faculty's community legal centre, the Law School offers students a unique opportunity to undertake clinical studies. Under supervision from experienced solicitors, students assist real clients who in most cases are disadvantaged and have no other access to legal services. Students run case files, which includes interviewing clients, developing legal strategies for conduct of the case, undertaking legal research, writing letters, preparing briefs to Counsel, making submissions and instructing barristers in court. Here, students can make a real contribution to the local community while gaining invaluable experience for when going out into the world to become a professional lawyer.

More International Opportunities

With over one hundred exchange agreements with top rated overseas universities, UNSW offers one of the biggest exchange programs at any Australian university. In addition, the Law School has direct links with several leading law faculties in the USA, Canada and Europe.

Our students generally undertake international exchanges for law subjects in their final or penultimate year. You may go on exchange twice, for up to a total of two sessions.

We also conduct regular winter schools in Beijing and summer schools in Hamburg.

For more information about exchanges visit the UNSW International Exchange Program website.

Special Attention Given to the First Year Experience

The Law School's innovative Peer Tutor Program supports first year students to make the successful transition into tertiary law studies. Taught by our senior students the program helps our first years to integrate academically and socially into the Law School community.

In recognition of the outstanding success of the program, Prue Vines, Director of First Year Studies, was awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award in 2002.

Active Student Life on Campus

The student Law Society (LawSoc) offers you the opportunity to get involved in one of the most active student societies on campus. Broadly, LawSoc's function is to serve the educational and social interests of all UNSW law students, including international and graduate law students.

Being on campus for your whole degree means you can have the best of all the wider university activities as well as those within the Law Faculty.

Excellent Career Outcomes

Our graduates are in high demand for positions in the leading law firms, with management consultants, in government and in the varied occupations in which having a law degree is a major advantage. This is, in part, evidenced by their excellent graduate starting salaries.

Even before you graduate we will open many doors for you. UNSW law students obtain a high percentage of summer clerkships at the most prestigious law firms, evidence of our close links to the legal profession and our commitment to the future careers of our students. UNSW law students complete clerkships not only in Australia but also in the Asia-Pacific region.

UNSW law students are also the most likely to be appointed as associates to the judiciary. These prestigious positions are highly sought after by aspiring barristers. Past students have worked as associates for the Chief Justice and other judges of the High Court of Australia and judges of the Federal Court of Australia and Supreme Court of New South Wales.
