Congratulations to all winners at the UNSW Law Awards Evening 2012

The annual UNSW Law Awards Evening was held on 3 May in the Law Building with over 140 students collecting a total of 170 awards for their efforts in 2011.

Family, friends and donors celebrated the academic achievements of students, while also being recognised themselves for the contributions made in supporting the studies of the winners.

Laura Soares Abrantes and Beba Sequeira are co-editors of the book “Secrecy: the Key to Independence” a compilation of Timorese women’s oral histories. In many cases it is the first time their stories have been told of their experiences during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor and their brave fight for independence.

Prestigious Harvard University scholarship won by UNSW Law graduate

UNSW Law alumnaRebecca Zaman has been awarded the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship to study a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School.  Rebecca graduated from UNSW in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts/Laws (Hons I) and the Alumni Graduand Award in recognition of her services to UNSW.  She is currently serving as Associate to the Hon Justice Kenneth Hayne AC of the High Court of Australia.

UNSW Human Rights Clinic is an Australian first

The UNSW Human Rights Clinic, the first of its kind in any Australian law school, is about to see its first students graduate. The inaugural class of six worked two days per week over the semester, putting learning into practice in advancing human rights at home and in our region.

The students assisted in representing Indonesian fisherman charged with people smuggling and helped to draft a manual for Indonesian lawyers to help migrant workers access insurance for human rights violations.

Big apple visit results in big wins for UNSW Model UN team

A record 10 awards were scooped up by UNSW students at the 2012 National Model United Nations (NMUN), held in the bright lights of New York City in April. Fifteen UNSW Law students took part in the annual four day international conference which attracts over 5000 delegates, the largest and most prestigious of its kind.

UNSW Law focuses on financial regulation

UNSW Law is fast becoming a leader in research on financial sector regulation. Last month saw the launch of an online portal tracking global regulatory developments and the appointment of the first CEO of the Centre for International Finance & Regulation (CIFR).

Banking and finance law specialist Ros Grady was appointed as the inaugural Chief Executive of the CIFR taking up her post on March 19. CIFR is a consortium of leading Australian and international universities and research centres led by UNSW Law and the Australian School of Business.

Recent graduate Chris Pearson awarded second place in Law Society essay competition

Congratulations to recent Commerce/Law graduate Chris Pearson on being awarded second place in the annual Animal Law Essay competition run by the Law Society of New South Wales, Young Lawyers.

Chris won a prize of $300 for his essay which focussed on the welfare of fish in response to the topic which asked entrants to discuss how and why some animals receive better treatment under the law than others.

A milestone for free access to law - the 500th AustLII database

On Tuesday 1 May the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) will mark a significant milestone for the free access to law movement when it makes available on its website the 500th database of public legal information.

A joint facility of the UNSW Law, University of Technology and Sydney University faculties of law, AustLII provides free internet access to Australasian legal materials. It is in effect a free open public library of legal materials, with over four million searchable documents, categorised into 500 different databases.
