NSW council amalgamations move closer as Tuesday deadline draws

Amelia Thorpe comments in the Australian Financial Review  (29 June 2015) on the possible amalgamation of local councils and the ramifications for the property industry
 
Amelia Thorpe, an urban planner and senior lecturer at UNSW Law, says while larger councils could play a better role on issues like transport and water catchment, the proposed reforms did not give them any power to take control of those issues. 
 
"If you want to achieve that, you need more fundamental reform," Ms Thorpe said. "It's not about bigger with same power, it's bigger with different powers."
