Miles Ma awarded UNSW Law 2016 Undergraduate Valedictorian

Yingzhe (Miles) Ma has been awarded the 2016 Undergraduate Valedictorian at the UNSW Law Awards Evening, Thursday 18 May.

UNSW Law Valedictorians are recognised for outstanding academic achievement and for their significant contribution to the communal life of UNSW Law.

Miles who recently completed a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce dual degree, emigrated from China with no English skills when he was nine years old. Upon receiving the award, Miles said “it is with great surprise that I was able to study law at UNSW, let alone become the 2016 LLB Valedictorian”.

During his time at UNSW Law Miles was an active member of the Faculty and student Law Society, running mooting competitions, academic workshops and a host of social activities.

Over the years Miles took full advantage of UNSW Law’s extensive range of offerings to expand his skills and knowledge outside the classroom, including an internship with leading academics at the Centre for Law, Markets and Regulation, attending the Shanghai Winter School program at Jiaotong University, and going on a Semester exchange to the University of Edinburgh.

Miles was a Law Peer Tutor at the law school, an opportunity that allowed Miles to pass on the knowledge he gained to support others in their own academic pursuits.

Miles said that the Law School’s strong focus on social justice is what inspired him to volunteer at victim support organisations and community legal centres, “the skills and knowledge I have gained from these experiences have been invaluable and I continue to use what I have learned every day”.

Miles is currently working as a Law Graduate at Allens within the Banking and Finance group and has already become involved in a range of pro bono work through the various community organisations that Allens supports.

UNSW Law is proud to name Miles as the 2016 Undergraduate Valedictorian and wish him the very best in his future endeavours.
