LAW UNSW : University of New South Wales, Faculty of Law - Sydney Australia

This year the Faculty of Law has eagerly watched its new building emerge from behind the barricades as construction progresses on the lower campus.

In October, the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Law co-hosted a special event to preview the site. The event also marked the official launch of the Law Endowment Campaign, with the announcement of key benefactors and partners, both corporate and individual.

The ‘Lighting the Flame’ ceremony took place in the Agora area located on level one. The current Dean, Professor Leon Trakman invited Founding Dean, Hal Wootten, Law Alumni President, Gabrielle Upton, and Student Law Society President, Eugene Yeung to light the flame, which symbolised past, present and future hopes for the Faculty of Law.

The construction site preview tour provided staff and visitors with an impression of the atria spaces, staircases and distinctive design concepts now visible in the concrete framework of the building. The completion date is scheduled for July 2006.

The fundraising campaign is well underway, under the expert guidance of our Campaign Chairman, Richard Alcock. The fundraising committee has been working at a furious pace to ensure that our premier, major and fellow benefactors are welcomed on board in time for the grand opening.

“Building Great Minds, Building Partnerships, Building Law” encapsulates the objectives for the Endowment Campaign, as the Faculty forges partnerships and creates opportunities for engagement between Law alumni, the profession and the Law community.

The Law Endowment will produce an annual income stream which is intended to offer essential supplementation to the budget in key areas of teaching, research and student programs, while providing a legacy for future generations.
