Leading scholar, the Hon. Keith Mason AC QC, joins UNSW Faculty of Law

UNSW Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome the Hon. Keith Mason AC QC, former President of the Court of Appeal of NSW as a Professorial Visiting Fellow.

Hon. Keith Mason AC QC

Professor Mason is a leading scholar and authority on restitution, equity and common law in Australia and will be teaching the undergraduate elective course, The Conceptual Framework of the Common Law.

“I’m excited about teaching this new and unique course that will explore the significance of legal taxonomy or categorisation,” Professor Mason said. “The vigorously insightful scholarship of the late Professor Peter Birks and the reactions of legal traditionalists (especially in Australia) have made the topic the site of the modern law's culture wars. The practical implications of placing a right or obligation within a particular category will, however, remain our focus.”

Professor Mason brings to this course his wealth of experience of the legal system garnered during his time spent as Chairman of the NSW Law Reform Commission, Solicitor General of NSW and President of the Court of Appeal of NSW.

Professor Mason is also co-author of Restitution Law in Australia (1995) with Professor John Carter, as well as the recent second edition, Mason & Carter's Restitution Law in Australia (2008).
