Former Staff and Students Receive Australia Day Honours

UNSW Faculty of Law is pleased to congratulate our former staff and students named in this year’s Australia Day Honours.

Amongst those to receive Honours were two notable former colleagues. The Honourable Ronald Sackville QC was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). A Professor of Law at UNSW from 1972-1985, Justice Sackville also served as Dean of the Faculty between1979-1981 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from UNSW in 2002. His many other achievements have included serving as Commissioner for Law and Poverty on the Australian Government Commission of Inquiry into Poverty (1973-1975); Chairman of the South Australian Royal Commission into the Non-Medical Use of Drugs (1979-1981); Chairman of the New South Wales Law Reform Commission (1981-1984); and Chair of the Access to Justice Advisory Committee (1993-1994). He was also an Assistant Commissioner of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (1992). Justice Ronald Sackville served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 1994 to 2008 and is now an acting judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

The Honourable Richard Colin Chisholm received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM). He was a foundation staff member of the Law School and stayed for 23 years during which time he also served as the first Head of the Law School in the late 1980s before leaving in 1993 to become a judge of the Family Court of Australia.

In receiving Honours they were joined by UNSW alumni including:

AO - Cheryl Sarah Bart (BCom/LLB `84 BJurisLLB `86). For service to the economic and cultural development of South Australia through leadership and executive roles, to the community through social welfare organisations, and to sport.

PSM - Brian Francis Corney (BCom/LLB `76). For outstanding public service in promoting better relationships between employers and employees and in supporting Victoria`s most vulnerable workers.

PSM - Jennifer Anne Granger (BA/LLB `81). For outstanding public service in the administration of taxation in Australia and internationally, particularly in the area of compliance.

OAM - Tom Anthony Doumanis (LLB `81). For service to football in NSW through executive roles with a range of sporting clubs and organisations, and to the community.

UNSW Faculty of Law is proud of these remarkable individuals and congratulated them on their well-deserved recognition.
