Fifty-seven debating teams from High Schools across Sydney and from as far afield as West Wyalong matched wits at the 2009 UNSW Debating Society Senior Schools Day.

The tournament organised by the UNSW Debating Society in association with the Faculty of Law, challenged senior school students to address key social issues including freedom of speech, health, education, and international affairs.

North Sydney Boys High School won the senior division against Kincoppal Rose Bay on the topic: “That we should send more troops to Iraq.”

Tangara won the intermediate division against Reddam House on the topic: “That the UN should have a standing army.”

The main aim of the competition for the UNSW Debating Society is to help debaters improve through high-quality adjudication. This is made possible with their adjudicators having either debated or adjudicated at intervarsity events such as the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships and the World Universities Debating Championships.

The Faculty of Law would like to thank the Debating Society for their hard work in organising the event and also the high school debating teams, coaches and coordinators for contributing to the success of the day.
