A review of the UNSW Law Revue 2009: Harried Prosecutor and the Prisoner in Afghanistan

By Simon Liu

The student cast, tech crew and band of UNSW’s Law Revue - ‘Harried Prosecutor and the Prisoner in Afghanistan’ celebrated the final performance of a very successful four night season on 4 September. With a two hour line up of skits, band numbers, acapellas and videos, the annual sketch comedy show upheld its tradition of satire, black humour and social commentary.

Performed in a ‘Hogwarts-inspired’ theatre, entertainment ranged from a choir singing the merits of an Australian Federal Bill of Rights to a Dr Phil-style sketch on the ‘Inconveniences in a Day in the Life of a Modern Day Vampire’. Each performance began and ended with choreographed dances by the entire cast backed up by the band.

Law Revue continues to remain a focal point of UNSW Law Society’s social life, allowing students to direct, produce and promote their very own show.

Co-director Sephora Sultana comments on her third year of being a part of Revue: “Law Revue doesn’t just give students something fun to do for six weeks of the year. It encourages people to develop. It gives them opportunities they might not have otherwise had and brings people together. Every year I have watched this process occur and I am no less inspired by it even after three years.”

Producers Chen Wang and Arthur Kam estimated an audience of over 700 people each night of the Law Revue’s four night run.

The students donated all proceeds from ticket sales to the Kingsford Legal Centre located in UNSW’s Faculty of Law.
