Fighting Poverty: UNSW Anti-Poverty Week

Anti-Poverty Week

Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians. Around the world, more than a billion people are desperately poor...

Anti-Poverty Week (11-17 October) is a national initiative that is concerned with poverty and hardship, both in Australia and abroad. It was initiated by the Social Justice Project at UNSW Faculty of Law in 2001 and now involves more than 350 activities each year around Australia. For the last 8 years, UNSW has hosted a series of events on campus as part of the national week. Students, clubs and organisations have planned activities to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of poverty in Australia and around the world, and encourage action to be taken in the fight against poverty.

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:

  • Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia;
  • Encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.

At UNSW, Anti-Poverty week is being held during Week 12. Students, clubs and organisations have planned over 10 activities to take place on campus during Anti-Poverty Week, with the aim of raising awareness the causes and consequences of poverty in Australia and around the world, and encouraging action to be taken in the fight against poverty.

Activities during Anti-Poverty Week at UNSW will include:

  • `Aid, Trade and Climate Change: Poverty in the Asia-Pacific`. Oxfam Forum.
    Tuesday 13 October, at 5:15pm in Matthews C
  • `Demand Dignity: Amnesty speakers` forum on Poverty and Indigenous Rights.
    Wednesday 14 October, at 5:30pm in CLB 4.
  • `Volunteer! Australia and Abroad`. Information Seminar on Volunteering Opportunities.
    Tuesday 13 October, at 1:00pm in John Goodsell 19.
