Teaching Excellence Awarded The UNSW Kingsford Legal Centre has won an Australian Award for University Teaching, in the category of Law and Legal Studies. The Australian Newspaper sponsors the national awards, presented in Canberra this year by the new Federal Education Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson.  
  
 Honorary Doctorate for Sir William Deane His Excellency, the Honourable Sir William Deane has received an honorary Doctor of Laws at the recent law graduation ceremony in May  
  
 Five New Deans Appointed The Vice-Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, Professor John Niland, today announced the successful completion of the process which will see five new Deans coming into UNSW in the first half of next year.

 Mentoring Program Receives Recognition The Indigenous Law Student Mentoring Program, a partnership between NSW Young Lawyers and UNSW's Law Faculty and Aboriginal Education Program, has been recognised with a Law Council of Australia award. The award, which was accepted by former UNSW law student and Chair of the Community Services Committee for the NSW Young Lawyers, Jennifer McVicar, recognises programs implemented by an organisation relating to community issues. This prestigious award was shared with the International Humanitarian Law Unit of the Australian Red Cross.

UNSW Marks International Poverty Week A special series of seminars is being held this week at the University of New South Wales to mark International Anti-Poverty Week. The seminars cover a wide range of issues relating to poverty in Australia and overseas, highlighting major problems and identifying possible priorities for addressing them.  
  
 Is Law Killing Sport? The increasing intrusion of law and lawyers into the sporting arena will be debated at a special public forum at the University of New South Wales next Monday, 29 October.

Lawyers to Help Indigenous Students with Legal Studies The University of New South Wales Aboriginal Education Program, Faculty of Law, and the NSW Young Lawyers have joined forces to launch a mentoring program for Indigenous law students. The pilot program, which will be launched on Monday 14 May, matches a young lawyer with an Indigenous law student so they can share legal, personal and study skills.  
  
 Jose Ramos-horta to Deliver Major Public Address at UNSW Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jose Ramos-Horta will outline his vision for the future of East Timor when he presents a public lecture, East Timor and the Region: The Opportunities and Perils Ahead, at the University of New South Wales on Wednesday, 30 May, 2001.  
  
 Defending the Public Interest in Cyberspace The new Baker & McKenzie Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre, to be launched in Sydney tomorrow, will focus on the regulation of the social space created by computing networks - cyberspace.

UNSW Law Faculty Leads China Law Exchange Program More that 50 Australian law students are attending a Winter School in Chinese Law at CUPL in Beijing this month  
  
 Elite Students Choose UNSW UNSW is the first choice for the majority of high achievers from last year's Higher School Certificate (HSC). Fifteen of the 22 HSC students who obtained the maximum rank possible - a UAI of 100 - have chosen to study at UNSW.  
  
 UNSW teaching standards awarded UNSW teachers have had their commitment to quality teaching rewarded in the UNSW Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2000.
