Background

Joy van Ardenne was an inspiration.  A brilliant Commerce/Law student, Joy contributed to university life in many ways.  She was always a "people" person, ever ready to lend a hand in bad times and genuinely happy for others when things went well.

Joy's academic and sporting accomplishments bore testimony to her determination to achieve the goals which she set for herself.  Tragically, one month after the completion of her studies in November 1993, at the age of 22, she died from a brain tumour.

Joy's diversity of interests was staggering - from the establishment of the University Women's Cricket Club to involvement in ballroom dancing.  Her involvement in the Law School extended to the UNSW Law Journal, first year law camps, mooting competitions (including the Jessup Cup), intervarsity cricket and the Halfway Dinner Committee.  Her academic achievements were legion.

Joy was incredibly motivated, and actively encouraged others, to strive, to achieve and give their all, whatever the task at hand.

This Award is lasting testimony and celebration of the spirit, intellect and generosity of Joy van Ardenne.  It is Joy's legacy which, for generations to come, will continue to motivate students to meet and surmount the challenges which confront them.

Purpose

The purpose of this Award is to provide financial support for a student to gain direct exposure to different styles of lawyering in practice, by undertaking an internship with an overseas organisation.  The Award will ensure that one student is supported to participate in an international internship each year, by assisting with payment of airfares, accommodation, visas and other costs of international travel.

The internship must be provided by an organisation located outside of Australia, nominated by the student and agreed to by the Director of Experiential Learning and the Dean, UNSW Law.  Such organisations may include:

  • human rights and social justice organisations;
  • government and non-government organisations undertaking legal or legal policy work;
  • a judicial court, tribunal or similar; and
  • another legitimate entity engaged in legal practice, advocacy, research or policy.

The Award recipient is responsible for organising their internship with the host organisation.  The internship must be approved by the Director of Experiential Learning, UNSW Law, or their delegate.  No guarantees are made that students will be able to do their internship with the organisation of their first choice.

The Award recipient must be eligible to enrol in, and must undertake, the subject LAWS 3308/JURD 7308 (UNSW Law Internship), and the internship must comply with the requirements of that subject.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Award, you must:

  • be in the 3rd, 4th or 5th year of a UNSW dual Law undergraduate degree; or
  • be in the 2nd or 3rd year of the UNSW Law Juris Doctor program.

You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

You must also be eligible to enrol in the subject LAWS 3308/JURD 7308 (UNSW Law Internship).  An applicant who has previously completed the subject is not eligible to enrol again in the subject, and is therefore not eligible for the Award.

Selection criteria

The Award will be granted in accordance with the following selection criteria:

  • academic merit based on WAM (as evidenced by academic transcript);
  • financial need based on Centrelink documents demonstrating ongoing receipt of government benefits and/or a statement from the student explaining their financial circumstances; and
  • a written statement of up to 300 words identifying the organisation the student would most like to do an internship with and explaining why.

Evidence of involvement and/or achievement in UNSW sporting activities/events will be highly regarded.
