Dr Catherine Bond joined the School of Law as a Lecturer in Semester 2 2009 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2012. Prior to this she came to the Faculty as a PhD Candidate in 2006 as part of the Australian Research Council-funded "Unlocking IP" project, based at the Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre. Catherine holds degrees in Media and Law (with Honours Class 1) from Macquarie University and a PhD from UNSW. Her doctoral thesis, 'For the Term of His Natural Life ... Plus Seventy Years' explored the constitutional, legislative and historical aspects of the public domain in Australian copyright.
Today she continues her focus on historical intellectual property issues with an ARC Discovery Grant-funded project on creators and copyright history and a project on the relationship between intellectual property and war, from World War One to today.
In 2015 Catherine was the Chair of the UNSW-wide Women in Research Network (WiRN) Organising Committee. She was also Acting Director of Research in Semester 2 2012; Director of the LLM (Innovation) and (Media and Technology Law) streams (2010 - 2014); and Director of the Master of Law, Media and Journalism (and its associated Graduate Diploma) programs (2011 - 2014).
