Brief overview

After completing my law degree and a post-graduate degree in International Law and Diplomacy, I spent several years as a public affairs radio producer in Canada and Australia. I commenced a career in law teaching in 1963 and joined the UNSW Faculty of Law in its first year of operation, 1971. I served as Dean and Head of School in 1975-1978 and, again, in 1987-1988. I took early retirement in 1996 but continue as an Honorary Visiting Professor in the Faculty.

My areas of teaching have recently been Indigenous Legal Issues and Human Rights Law at both LLB and LLM levels. Most of my prior teaching has been in the field of Public Law, in subjects such as Constitutional Law, Legal Systems and Administrative Law.

My major publications are Understanding Law (6^th ed, 2002) with R Chisholm; Indigenous Peoples and Governance Structures (2002) with G D Meyers and D Craig (2002); Indigenous Legal Issues: Commentary and Materials (3^rd ed, 2003) (with H McRae, L Beacroft and L McNamara). I am Title Editor for "Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders" in The Laws of Australia.
