Research Student Scholarships

Sir Anthony Mason PhD Award in Public Law


The purpose of the Award is to provide additional support to one UNSW PhD candidate each semester, who has had their candidature confirmed and is undertaking research in the area of public law.

Deadline for applications for S1 and S2 2018 

Friday, 6 April 2018. Decisions on the Award for both S1 and S2 2018 will be made at the same time based on the applications received by this date.

Amount and Tenure

Each semester, the Award will have a value of AUD $2,500.  The Award will be paid in a lump sum.


Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The Award is available to candidates who have had their PhD candidature confirmed and are undertaking research in the area of public law.
  • The Award is available to both domestic and international students.
  • The Award will be available to both full-time and part-time candidates.
  • Candidates concurrently holding other Awards are eligible to apply.

Selection criteria

The Award shall be awarded in accordance with the selection criteria stated below:

  • Evidence of academic merit.
  • Evidence of financial hardship or difficulty, if relevant.
  • Brief outline of the PhD research project (max. 700 words).
  • Statement on how the research project will contribute to the field of public law (max. 500 words).
  • Consideration may be given to the applicant’s personal qualities such as extra-curricular activities, vision and innovation as evidenced by contribution to University life and/or their community.

Conditions of Award

  • The take up of this Award may not be deferred.
  • This Award does not provide any allowances (e.g. for thesis or relocation).

PhD Excellence Award

UNSW Law is pleased to announce a PhD Excellence Award. The new Award will acknowledge UNSW Law’s top PhD candidates. It will be made to all PhD students who receive two “A’s” from examiners.

The Award date will be made in January/February of the year following completion of the PhD. Successful candidates will receive a letter signed by both the Dean of the Faculty of Law and by the Associate Dean (Research). They will also be invited to attend the Faculty’s Annual Awards Evening usually held in May.
