Overview

Dr Stephen Hall is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law where he has taught since 1996. He completed his LL.B. degree at the University of Queensland in 1987 mostly on a part-time and external basis while working in various parts of north Queensland.

After being admitted to the bar in New South Wales in 1987, he worked as a Legal Officer, Senior Solicitor and Counsel with the Australian Attorney-General's Department in Sydney mainly in the area of administrative law. While at the Attorney-General's Department, he was involved in numerous high-profile litigation matters, furnished legal advice to federal Ministers and permanent departmental secretaries, and undertook a major role in the legal training of departmental officers. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Secretary's Prize by the permanent Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department.

While at the Attorney-General's Department, he undertook part-time studies in the new LL.M. programme at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 1991 he became the first person to graduate with the LL.M. degree from UTS. The degree was awarded with first class honours and a concentration in Human Rights Law.

Taking leave from the Attorney-General's Department for most of 1991-1994, he completed the Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) degree at the University of Oxford, in the fields of international law and European Community law. During his research work at Oxford, he received the Overseas Research Student (ORS) award and was made a Commonwealth Scholar.

Dr Hall was appointed to the Faculty of Law in 1996, and is the Director of the European Law Centre. He was a visiting professor at Tulane University in 1998 where he taught a course on the European Union in international economic law. He was a visiting fellow at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law (University of Cambridge) in 2000.

He believes that the law is about much more than power, interest and sentiment. He also thinks he understands the rules of cricket.
