KLC Internship

I have always had a strong interest in the area of human rights and access to justice, so I jumped at the opportunity to complete the student placement program at Kingsford Legal Centre (KLC). Completing the KLC component of the Law, Lawyers and Society course in my first year introduced me to the work of the Centre and gave me an idea of what to expect from the elective Clinical Legal Experience course.

I completed the employment stream of the internship. At the end of the course I stayed on during the mid year break to complete Practical Legal Training (PLT). During this time I worked on a number of matters in various areas of the law such as discrimination, domestic violence and housing. I developed skills which I have taken to my graduate employment such as how to effectively manage a case file; understanding the process of mediation; the importance of confidentiality; and how to manage distressed clients. The client interviewing skills I took from the course are invaluable.

The KLC course was the highlight of my time at law school. I encouraged fellow students to enrol and they thanked me afterwards! The staff at KLC are excellent mentors and once I have obtained my practicing certificate I would like to return as a volunteer solicitor.
