Brief overview
Honorary Associate Professor, Dr Janice Gray  specialises in the law and governance of water, property and aspects of energy. Immediately, before joining the Faculty of Law, UNSW Sydney,  Janice  was a solicitor in the corporate section of one of the large, commercial, Sydney law firms. She holds a current practising certificate as a  lawyer and has served on the Property Law Committee of the NSW Law Society. She has also held  management positions in the public sector. As an academic, Janice  taught: Property, Equity and Trusts; Land Law; Advanced Issues in Property; Native Title; Equity and Trusts; Water Law and Contemporary Policy;  Natural Resources Law; and Australasian Journal of Natural Resources Law and Policy internships..

Janice is particularly interested in the intersections between property law with other fields, such as  water law (including sewage), natural resources law (including unconventional gas and fracking)  and native title. This is reflected in her  national and international publications.  She  was part of joint research team (based at UTS)  looking at sustainable sanitation. That project won a NSW  Green Globe Award for Innovation.

Janice  has sat on numerous committees at UNSW Sydney ranging from the university-wide Animal Care and Ethics Committee to the faculty-based Staffing Committee, Dean's Advisory Committee, Visiting Scholars' Committee, Research Funding Committee, the Post-graduate Committee and the Qualifying Degree Committee. She  was also a long-term Chair of the Faculty Board and was Chair of the UNSW Law Post Graduate Education Committee.  She was the Editor-in- Chief of the Australasian Journal of Natural Resources Law and Policy  (2011 - July, 2016) and was formerly an editor of the same journal  (2009- 2010); an editor of the Human Rights Defender (2008 - 2016) and is on the International Advisory Board of the Canadian Journal of Native Studies (approx 1999- present). In 2017 (and early 2018), Janice was  the Academic Advisor- Applications, in the Faculty of Law. She is an Affiliate of the Connected Waters Initiative (UNSW) and a member of the Allens Hub for Law, Technology and Innovation.

In 2019, Janice  returned once again to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford, as a Visiting Scholar (competitively selected position),  presenting the fruits of some research and undertaking further research. (She was  a formal Visiting Scholar at CSLS Oxford  in 2009 and 2015. In  2009, she was also elected a Visiting Scholar at Wolfson College, University of Oxford.) She has visited  Oxford often and has well-established research connections there. In 2019, Janice was  also a Visiting Scholar (competitively selected position) in the  Faculty of Law at Kings College London where she was based for six months.

In 2015, Janice was  a Visiting Scholar at  Queen Mary, University of London (July - December, 2015) while in  2012 she  was an invited Visiting Scholar  at SupAgro, a grande ecole, in Montpellier, France.  Janice has also held positions as a Visiting Scholar/ Professor at the  Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, PUC-Rio, Brazil (2004);  University of Ottawa (1996); University of York (Toronto) (1996); and University of Saskatchewan (1996).

As a teacher, Janice consistently scored very highly in student satisfaction surveys. She designed and implemented new courses within the Faculty.

Janice is interested in supervising PhD candidates in the fields of property law, housing, water law, sewage law, unconventional gas, and food security as it relates to  the nexus between land, water and/or unconventional gas.  She is both an experienced PhD supervisor and examiner. She  has also been  an external progress reviewer for PhDs.  In 2017, one of her  (international) PhD students was awarded a UNSW-wider PhD excellence award.
